Ace of Spades

Writer's picture: Nathali RosenkildeNathali Rosenkilde

Both ends and all of the shades in between, of the value scale are portrayed in this abstract piece. There are the darkest blacks for the shadows and the whitest whites on the playing cards. It is interesting how the artist put all of the playing cards up in the air and behind the ace. This makes it seem as though the other cards are building up the ace which is bigger than all of the other cards. The use of scale adds to this idea that all of the other cards make up the ace. Aces can be either the smallest or the largest card in a game and is always a special card to have because of this which, in my opinion, adds to the abstractness of the piece. Are the other cards building up the ace? Or are they flying away from the ace? Overall, I really like how precise the ace is and how everything else, the table, Play-Doh, and shadows, are a lot looser and how the cards kinda make you think.
